TANGIBLE ART/TANGIBLE GROWTH

Summer 2008

Upon emancipation several foster youth will be offered the opportunity to study art in Paris, France, for one week. This program is intended to inspire youth to bond with art while offering a new sense of identity and group unification. Through art our expectation is for youth to construct a new representation of who they are, learn cultural and ethnic tolerance, while building a sense of self-sufficiency. Knowing they can travel to a foreign country with support and ease youth will come to the realization that they can also travel into the adult world with a sense of confidence

December 2007: Emancipated youth in Southern California between the ages of 18 -24 will be eligible to apply for the SELF PORTRAIT: Passport to Paris program.

Youth will be asked to submit an application and a short book report on "Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglas" By Fredrick Douglas no later than FEBRUARY 28, 2007.

A selection committee of volunteers, board members, and social workers will review the book reports and determine the ten youth who will be selected. All youth are encouraged to apply.

7 Days in Paris

Five young women and five young men will be accompanied to Paris by Keariene Muizz, the director of Positive Resistance and a volunteer. A male chaperone will supervise the young men in their separate dorm facility.

Ms. Muizz lived in Paris for two years while attending La Sorbonne and speaks French fluently.

THE VIDEO DIARY: Documenting a Discovery

A total of thirteen corporations are needed to sponsor each of the ten emancipated youth selected SELF PORTRAIT: Passport to Paris program, along with Mario A. Robinson (noted art instructor who has taught displaced Katrina victims), a volunteer and Keariene Muizz.

How will the video diary work? All thirteen individuals will be interviewed extensively before, during and after their arrival in Paris. Each individual, be it a youth, instructor or volunteer, will bear the logo of the sponsoring corporation while taking art classes abroad and participating in the research study which will measure the outcome of the program.

The corporation logo will also be printed on the Positive Resistance Journals that will be kept by all participants.

Several media corporations have already secured interviews for selected participants.

Positive Resistance welcomes contact from all interested corporations to donate merchandise and goods in preparation for this program, especially the following:

Jansport (backpacks)
Kenneth Cole/REACTION (luggage)
Wal-Mart (Passport Photos)
Disneyland (Paris)
Starbucks
Google

No major airline has been secured to transport this special group to Paris, we would love to document your generosity!
